"Lovely Place"

We stayed here on a 3 night stay, never used Hotels Direct before, we will be using them again. Hotel & rail tickets what a bargain.Certainly recommend the The Place to stay, central to everything, helpful staff, only down side we were on the top floor, no lift! (4 floors).

"Not as good as it looks"

Although the room was reasonably comfortable it was in need of a makeover. The bathroom was quite small, no toilet roll holder and the power shower did not work as it should so very slow trickle of water. We did not eat at the hotel as we had experienced poor service at breakfast, I ask for fried eggs and my wife asked for an omelette. The eggs took 20 minuets to land and the omelette 45 minutes. I say omelette in the loosest term, never seen anything like it before (didn`t taste very good either). We would return to Edinburgh but at a different hotel.

"Great value and great location."

We had a great 2 night break in the city. The hotel was handy for all the sights and attractions. The staff in the hotel were friendly and efficient. The room was adequate - clean and tidy with usual facilities. Only drawback was we were on the top floor with no lift. This didn`t deter from our mini break as we are both fit.

"Boutique hotel in great location for City break"

We really enjoyed our stay at the hotel. We booked a superior room and it was massive with two queen sized beds, plenty of storage space and a lovely bathroom. The staff were very pleasant and helpful. The breakfast was very enjoyable and the choice of hot and cold food was very good. We would definately stay here again.

"accessability to room & noise level"

Booked this hotel owing to its proximity to the Playhouse. Did not feel the need to mention when booking that I am disabled & walk with the aid of a stick; I also have a heart condition which further limits me physically therefore a room on the third floor in a hotel was far from ideal. We also found the hotel extremely noisey, in the evening the noise travelled right up the stairwell from the bar & in the morning the door of the room adjacent to ours banged closed about twenty times from around 8.30am, we discovered on investigation that it was the staff cleaning and leaning the lock on the door closed as they went in and out, perhaps the door could have been left ajar??

The only drawback was the 70 steps to our room. On the plus side the view was great.

Great hotel and staff were friendly and very helpful apart from young girl helping with breakfast on Friday and Saturday morning who was extremely grumpy and made it known that she wasn`t happy in her work which for your lovely hotel was not a great asset... also our room wasn`t clean when we came back about 4pm on Friday but will definitely be coming back to visit again ...

Thank you for ensuring that our visit to Edinburgh was so special, we had an amazing time which would not have been as special without your wonderful hospitality and helpfulness plus the room was lovely and spacious, everything we wished for and more plus the amazing views from our room window.Thank you so much and be assured I will fully recommend you to all our family and friends. We can`t wait to come back :-)

"hotel"

a few minor problems, no shelf in bathroom had to put toiletries on the floor, and although staff were polite they did not understand what we were trying to tell them when ordering breakfast so we never got the breakfast we were trying to order, and there was not much to eat at the buffet either, and for those who like a full english well that wont happen as they dont do bacon or pork sausage, asked why at reception and was told it was because the owners were muslim, but we did have a fab room at the front overlooking george street, and it is a very nice hotel , if they sort out these minor problems i would definately return.

"Convenient central position for rail, bus and tram."

Friendly, clean, comfortable together with good quality food. Ideal for touring around Edinburgh and further afield. Marvellous view across the Firth of Forth from our bedroom, but sadly no lift to get us up to our room.

"Staff trying hard but need managing "

The hotel suffered a power failure at 7pm which resulted in no shower and no dinner available. The young staff were unsupervised so they were doing their best but no management were in evidence until later that night. I went out for dinner. After going to bed an idiot fellow guest was knocking on doors at about 11pm, he was able to open my door and of course met an angry response - he claimed he did not know where his room was - a disturbed night was not appreciated after the earlier disruption, and I am surprised he was able get in as there was an electronic key system. Mine was a business stay therefore breakfast starting at 7am would have been desirable, however I was advised it did not start until 7.30 - surely to late for a week day. When I arrive for breakfast at just after 7.30 there were no staff in the dining room but everything I needed was available and there was reasonable fruit, cereal, bread, coffee etc.

"BETTER THAN ALL THE REST!"

Randomly picked The Place online when usual hotel was unavailable, so glad I did! Didn`t know what to expect and boy was I delighted! The staff could not have been nicer, room was more than first class, food excellent and we loved the Christmas trees everywhere. Will certainly recommend and return again. Hope Bremner

"a Place to find a friendly welcome."

The staff are friendly and try to make the hotel a pleasant place to stay. I found the lighting in the bedrooms to be too dim, and had to climb three flights of stairs to my room. There is no lift. Breakfast of grilled tomatoes, mushrooms and baked beans was lukewarm. The location of the hotel is excellent and my bedroom was quiet.

"Great location, friendly staff, spacious room"

Had a great stay at the Place Hotel. The location is fantastic for exploring the city - just over the bridge from the Old town but also close to the shops and some lovely restaurants on Broughton Street. Great value for the price - good breakfast, basic toiletries in room, good shower, kettle & tea / coffee etc. We had a huge room with windows looking out over New Town with the sea and Fife in the distance. The only `missing` bits were a fridge / minibar in the room and also a lift - we were on the 2nd floor, which might be a challenge for some with luggage. There is a bar and terrace that seems to be a `place to go` that gets quite bustling in the evenings - although we didn`t try it out so can`t comment on the cocktails!Overall, would recommend!

We enjoyed our stay at The Place. Ideal location for our purpose and easy to find with convenient parking close by. Great view of the Forth. A very neat, clean and smart environment, welcoming staff. It felt a little awkward to walk through the restaurant with our luggage to get to no.38, intrusive on diners. I felt that the price was in excess of the simplicity of the accommodation. I would happily stay here again but hopefully for a lower rate.

"The Place ... Edinburgh "

Wow.... What a fantastic hotel... Room I cannot fault.... Neither the service from the staff ...they couldn`t do enough for you... Especially the young lad who not only took my partner to show him where the car park was he also took the suitcase to our room whilst we relaxed in the bar.. Reception staff were very helpful and happy to help... Also the night watchman who was very polite and curtious and kept changing the lights for us to different colours.... Overall I would say 10/10 .... We will definitely be returning .. Hopefully very soon ...

Hi Just a few thing the shower could of been better in pressure, also a small armchair in the room would have been nice and lastly some small packets of complimentary Scottish shortbread would have been nice.

"Ideal Location"

The Place Hotel is a cool, calm, on trend hotel, ideally situated in Edinburgh`s New Town, close to the bus station and tram stop. Our bedroom and bathroom were extremely spacious, with a separate dressing area, giving the feel of a suite of rooms rather than an en-suite! The only down-side to our stay was less than attentive service from the dining-room staff. We were left to find our own table at breakfast and had already helped ourselves from the buffet before anyone appeared. The food was generally good, but there were no mini sachets or jugs of milk for the self-service tea/coffee, meaning we had to pour from the one-litre caraffe at the buffet into our cups - quite messy! Also, I would have preferred freshly made tea, not making it myself from a large flask - tea should be made with boiling water in my opinion. Overall I`d give it 8 / 10 :D

"Helpful and pleasant staff, good location, large bedroom excellent, small bedroom very poor"

Generally, we enjoyed our stay but would not have done so had we not been able to upgrade our room for the second night at an additional cost of £10. The first `double` room ( perhaps better described as a single) was up a flight of 68 steps (no lift) and felt like a garret. Only a dribble of water from the basin, ineffective radiator, bedside light switches but no bedside lights and paintwork in dire need of touch-up/redecoration. In contrast the room to which we upgraded on the second night could not be faulted. Very large room with excellent bathroom, huge bed, lovely view, easily accessible and all facilities working. The staff were excellent. The breakfast was good though strangely no bacon on the menu. Common parts clean and tidy .Roof terrace with function room below is under construction at the rear which might well change the character of this hotel. We would certainly return provided that we could be assured of a decent room

"Great hotel great location"

Fantastically spacious room and ensuite, let down slightly by the minor repairs required i.e bathroom mirror missing, socket hanging off wall and the shower would benefit from a deep clean. Breakfast perfectly adequate but rather bland compared to other 4* hotels Ive stayed in. The coal face staff were brilliant throughout and I do hope they get the recognition they deserve from their employer. Overall a great hotel which I hope to return to.

"Fantastic room representing outstanding value for money, great service from all staff members"

A brilliant hotel in Edinburgh city centre; great location for the business and leisure traveller (I was on business and the hotel more than met my expectations). Very well looked after by all staff members, just the right amount of attention without the feeling of being pestered. The food was very good and was excellent value for money for a City Hotel. I am in Edinburgh 2/3 times per month on business and will definitely stay there again.
