Very comfortable & clean. Had a problem first night with TV but staff offered me another room with no fuss or argument. Staff were helpful and friendly, although Hotel is being refurbished the builders and scaffolding did not bother me. Had a great view over Calton Hill, Holyrood and Arthur`s Seat. Breakfast excellent & set me up for the day. Recommended & would book again, great central location handy for New and Old Towns 4 mins walk from Waverley.

Stayed with group girls our annual xmas shopping trip. Normally stay on Princes Street, wanted a change. Hotel was more than expected, rooms were to a high standard and very comfortable., and breakfast superb. Didn`t get to use pool facilities unfortunately. Location perfect for shopping. Would definitely stay again.

"The staff were extemely helpful and friendly."
We enjoyed our stay at this hotel, it was ideally placed for the centre and walking distance from the station. The room was very clean. I liked that there was some-one specially placed in reception to give information about the city and maps etc which was great but the thing that stood out the most was that when we checked out the man at reception asked if we wanted to leave our luggage for storage if we weren`t leaving the city straight away and if he could help with anything else or book us a taxi! This has never happened before I was very impressed!

"Decidedly average..."
Not near worth the £225/night I paid for the room. Mildew on the walls, light bulbs broken off at the glass with base still in the holder, Toilet flush handle loose, towel rail holder hanging loose, no grouting between some of the floor tiles in the bathroom, room covered in a fine layer of dust, noisy and the beds were not the most comfortable. Premier Inn the next time..Sorry Edinburgh Carlton...!! PS...the staff were smashing..!!

"First class"
From the moment we stepped into the reception, booked in and settled in, the staff were attentive and extremely helpful and most of all professional. Although the bedrooms were a little tired looking they were very clean and quickly refreshed each day. We will certainly stay there again.

"Room temperature"
Having stayed frequently at the Carlton albeit a number of years ago we decided to have a one night stop over to see if it had changed in any way. The Carlton was always hot and the rooms could be a bit stuffy but were always tolerable. On this occasion however we fond our room way too hot and stuffy verging on unpleasant and was not conducive to a good nights sleep. Bizarrely for February we had to turn on the air-con to try to cool the room and freshen the air. Not what you would expect in Scotland mid winter. If all room are like this there must be an enormous energy bill for the hotel. Surely there could be a simple engineering solution to allow guests to control the temperature of the rooms on an individual basis rather than a one size fits all, thus saving on energy in the long term.

"Lovely hotel but noisy rooms at the front!"
Hotel is well appointed as are the rooms. We had a room at the front (North Bridge) which due to there being no double glazing, was noisy - deliveries to shops across the road began at 5am. Room (309) was very hot and made no difference putting the room ventilation on. Could have opened the window of course but ..... traffic noise! On the plus side, the staff are great, breakfasts filling and on the whole, we would stay there again if we could book a room away from the street.

"This hotel badly needs refurbishing and updating."
The room was shabby and in need of refurbishment. Beside the door on the wall there was a large sheet of board where something has been removed. The bathroom floor was not clean round the edges and the towels were thin and hard. When we arrived I had to request a replacement seat as the one on the bedside unit was stained, and there was also a rip in the carpet. I cannot believe this hotel classes itself as 4 star. When we ordered porridge it came smelling and tasting burnt - the person who served it in the kitchen MUST have noticed. The staff were helpful and pleasant at all times but the dated shabby rooms let this hotel down badly and consequently we will not be returning until major improvements have been made.

"Not the best view"
Our room was an odd shape but functional. It was also small for a double, and although it had 2 windows looking out I to two different direction neither had a view as they both looked out onto a green turret. The cooked breakfast did not include hash browns or mushroom and often there were no fried eggs available. The fruit provided was excellent. The staff were polite and curtious. The swimming pool was a reasonable size and the steam doom and sauna were great as well. The jacuzzi was not working properly. The hotel was clean but dated and the lactation within Edinburgh is great as it is central to almost everything.

"Great hotel but noisy on street side"
Hotel and facilities were excellent. However our room was street side overlooking North Bridge and the noise was unbearable until at least 5am. Unfortunately the window didn`t close either so we couldn`t even drown it out. Would recommend asking for a room not facing North Bridge.

"Very noisy (should have double glazing)"
Hotel was very up to date food was also good. My room was at the front of the hotel and because of single glazing the noise from the street below was very loud in deed and went on until after 4am. I would go back again but request a room at the rear of the hotel
