Moulin Rouge! The MusicalMoulin Rouge! The MusicalMoulin Rouge! The MusicalMoulin Rouge! The MusicalMoulin Rouge! The Musical
The Show
Baz Luhrmann's revolutionary musical finally comes to the stage! With its iconic soundtrack - brilliantly remixed and featuring songs by Adele, Beyonce, Rhianna and more - this dazzling adaptation of the hit 2001 film has garnered five Olivier Award Nominations, including Best New Musical. Set in the storied Parisian nightclub at the turn of the 20th Century, Moulin Rouge tells the story of young poet Christian as he falls in love with burlesque dancer Satine, star performer of the cabaret club, who is also coveted by a monstrous Duke. We follow the pair through Paris' historic Montmartre Quarter as Satine gradually comes to realise that she is falling for Christian, even as she conceals a terrible secret. Tony Award-winning director Alex Timbers draws back the curtain on a wild world of glamour and romance, brought to life by a hugely creative team of composers and choreographers including Emmy Award nominee Sonya Tayeh. Welcome to Moulin Rouge, a must-see musical experience and a touching saga of truth, beauty, freedom and love.

History of Moulin Rouge
Baz Luhrmann's 2001 film re-invented musicals for a modern audience, setting the stage for a surge of renewed interest in musical film and theatre. 17 years later, director Alex Timbers sought to bring the story of Christian and Satine to a new audience, staying true to Luhrmann's vision while also breathing new life into the show with new songs by a range of contemporary artists. Since its premiere in Boston in 2018, Timbers' stunningly creative remix of Luhrmann's classic has wowed critics and audiences on Broadway, in Melbourne and in the West End.

Awards and what the Critics say
In addition to five Olivier Award nominations for its West End production, Moulin Rouge won 10 Tony Awards for its Broadway production, including Best Musical and Best Choreography. Ava Wong Davies of the Independent described Moulin Rouge as 'ostentatious, absurd and completely ravishing to look at,' while the Telegraph's Dominic Cavendish called Moulin Rouge 'the perfect way to celebrate our post-pandemic freedom.'

Interesting facts about Moulin Rouge
Baz Luhrmann chose not to direct the stage adaptation of his film as he felt that a younger director would have a 'purer' connection to the story. In 1891, posters advertising the Moulin Rouge nightclub were created by artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, who also features as a character in the play.
